THERE IS MORE BESIDES AMSTERDAM (WHO KNEW?!)

If I would ask you to name one area in The Netherlands, something tells me you’ll say Amsterdam – with its canals, bikes, cheeky green plants, and museums filled with works from famous Dutch masters like Rembrandt van Rijn, Johannes Vermeer and Vincent Van Gogh.

But of course you already know there is much more to our little country than just Amsterdam’s city centre.

Last week, together with some international content creators, I was invited by the tourism office of Amsterdam & Partners to go on a short promotional campaign. The brief? Hop on a bike and explore Amsterdam’s broader metropolitan area.

MEET ZAANSTREEK-WATERLAND / LAAG HOLLAND

I had a bit of a chuckle, as the area of the assigment turned out to be Zaanstreek-Waterland and neighbouring Laag Holland (“Low Holland“). And that’s right where we live!

Nick and I bought a house in Zaandam (biggest city in the Zaan region) in 2021 – after living abroad in Sydney and London for almost 8 years and realizing the housing market was a lot better here than in Amsterdam, even though it’s literally just one stop away by train.

Spending most of our free time on renovating our 100-years old house, and tending to our backyard and our allotment in Amsterdam-South, I have to confess that we haven’t explored as much of the Zaandam area as we would have liked. So this press trip is a nice reminder to get our bikes out more often.

And if you ask me, nothing quite compares to the charm of old Dutch industrial and maritime communities. Top that with a relaxing cycling route connecting the local sights and hospitality, and you’ve got one happy Travel Tester right there.

GO CYCLESEEING WITH THE TRAVEL TESTER!

If you’re a bit like me and love to imagine yourself living in the past sometimes, they polish off your “tweewieler” (two-wheeler), fill your bike basket with a bottle of water, a map, some sunscreen and a raincoat (we’re still in Holland, after all), practice your best Dutch ‘Gggg‘-sound, and join me on a fun trip around my backyard in Old Holland.
