When packing for your trip, no matter the region, it’s common to wonder, “What type of plug adapter will I need?” The answer depends on where you’re traveling, as outlets vary from place to place. It can be confusing to know which adapter to bring, so we’re breaking down what you should pack when traveling to our core destinations.
Africa Plug Adapters
The image above shows the wide array of plug adapters needed for the African countries you may visit with Travel Beyond. In places like Botswana, you may encounter several different plug types. To be safe, your consultant may recommend a universal plug adapter, but in general, make sure that whatever you purchase aligns with the specific plug requirements for the country or countries you’re visiting.
South America Plug Adapters
If you have an adapter that aligns with plug type C, you will be covered in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Peru. Brazil also uses plug type N. Ecuador uses the same plugs as North America (types A and B), so if you are traveling from this region, you will likely not need an adapter for Ecuador or the Galápagos Islands.
Southeast Asia Plug Adapters
When traveling to Southeast Asia, purchasing a universal plug adapter is best. This is because Southeast Asia destinations use different plugs, sometimes even within the same country. To be safe, we recommend a universal plug adapter.
Antarctica and the Arctic Plug Adapters
Most expedition ships use the same plugs as North America (types A and B), so you will likely not need an adapter while onboard. However, if you are spending a night or two in South America prior to visiting Antarctica, you may need an adapter that is compatible with plug type C, for example. Similarly, if you are heading to the Arctic and spending time in Norway or Iceland before embarking, you may need an adapter compatible with plug type F.
