Monday, July 14, 2025

In a major step that could help slash the carbon footprint of the aviation industry, Shell Aviation, Accenture, and American Express Global Business Travel (Amex GBT) have launched the first development of the Avelia platform, which will become a cross-industry sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) booking platform. Initially a one-supplier-fits-all system, Avelia now enables businesses and airlines to purchase SAF from a variety of suppliers, bringing about more efficient and transparent fuel management throughout the sector.

This move is happening at a time when aviation companies are coming under pressure to lower their greenhouse gas emissions and meet a series of ambitious sustainability targets. Through the wider network, Avelia would look to increase the intake of SAF, giving companies the ability to demonstrably reduce their environmental footprints—forever changing how we think about the future of aviation.

Evolution to a Multi-Supplier Platform

The multi-supplier nature of Avelia supports the increasing need for SAF and accommodates wider industry involvement. This extends the reach of the benefits of greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions. Customers can access GHG benefits from multiple SAF producers, making it easier for corporations, airlines, and freight forwarders to manage their SAF portfolios.

Key enhancements include

Independent Data Hosting: Accenture manages data processing and host environment activities for SAF-based transactions, creating a secure, auditable, and independently verified record of SAF’s environmental performance.

Bring Your Own SAF (BYOS) Model: This capability allows airlines to track SAF they’ve acquired outside of the Shell supply network within Avelia, giving them a complete picture of their SAF consumption.

Multilateral governance: Avelia is setting up a governance to bring about transparency and collaboration across multiple entities in the SAF space.

The improvements will simplify the administration of SAF and make the process of procuring SAF even easier and more attractive for companies that are already engaged in reducing their aviation-related emissions.

Impact on Aviation Decarbonization

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is pivotal, as it can reduce lifecycle GHG emissions from aviation by up to 80% when neat. Although it is environmentally friendly, the production of SAF is small, comprising only 0.7% of jet fuel worldwide production in 2025. Avelia’s expansion is in response to the gap it sees between corporate demand and a limited supply of SAF and will seek to aggregate demand from corporate customers to drive SAF production and use.

To date, 17 airport injection points globally have used Avelia to inject more than 33 million gallons of SAF into the world’s fuel supply since its introduction. This project has helped to remove more than 300,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent, highlighting the platform’s capacity to fuel aviation decarbonisation.

Strategic Partnerships and Future Outlook

This joint effort from Shell, Accenture, and Amex GBT represents our shared ambition to drive sustainability in aviation. As a strategic advisor and technology partner, Accenture has helped guide the evolution of Avelia support, managing data processing and hosting to enable confidentiality and control for the customers of the platform. Through its broad base of clients worldwide, Amex GBT is significantly leveraged to aggregate SAF demand, a key factor in sustaining the scale and impact of the platform.

In the future, Avelia continues to scale the platform, adding new SAF suppliers and new functionalities to enable the aviation industry transition to net zero emissions. Through collaboration and technology, Avelia is designed to expedite the use of SAF and help air travel become part of a more sustainable future.

Conclusion

The development of Avelia rocks the post for the aviation industry to decarbonise. Developed to offer greater access to SAF across a range of suppliers and improve transparency, Avelia is expected to enable airlines and corporate customers to accelerate their sustainability initiatives.

Having built strong industry participation and a strong pipeline of innovations to come, Avelia is well placed to be at the cape of what promises to be a revolution in the reduction of aviation emissions and the integration of sustainable fuels in the aviation sector. As the industry nods towards sustainability as the main driver of growth, Avelia’s platform will undoubtedly play a major role in accelerating the transformation into greener and more efficient aviation.
