Do you dream of waking up to new horizons every few weeks, or even every few days? You’re not alone. More people than ever are choosing to trade their routine for the road, embracing long-term travel as a lifestyle, not just a vacation. But how do you actually do it? How can you travel more without draining your savings or feeling overwhelmed?
I’ve been living the travel life for over 15 years now, and while everyone’s path is different, I’ve learned a few practical (and fun) ways to make long-term travel possible. Whether you’re planning a sabbatical, a career break, or an open-ended adventure, these tips can help turn your wanderlust into reality.
How to travel long-term
1. Shift Your Mindset
First things first: if you want to travel more, you have to believe it’s possible for you. Forget the idea that travel is only for the rich or the retired. Know that you are enough, your mind is the first recourse it takes to travel abroad. Long-term travel isn’t about luxury; it’s about priorities. When you start thinking in terms of experiences over things, you begin to see where you can make changes that support your travel goals.
2. Redesign Your Finances
Traveling long-term isn’t necessarily expensive—it’s all about how you manage your money. Many people fund their adventures by saving intentionally, cutting out non-essentials, and living below their means for a period before hitting the road.
One major strategy? Reduce your housing expenses. If you own a home, you might consider renting it out or even choosing to downsize house part exchange, an approach that can free up capital while simplifying your life.
Others sell their belongings entirely and go full nomad. Imagine all those extra clothes that falling out your wardrobe, if you’re looking to begin travelling, now is the best time to sell you unused clothes or even donate them to your local charity shop. It might sound scary, but many find this liberating. Less stuff = more freedom.
3. Work on the Road
Thanks to technology, earning an income while traveling is easier than ever. Here are a few options:
- Remote work: Many traditional jobs can now be done online. Ask your employer about working remotely, or look for companies that are remote-first.
- Freelancing: From writing and web design to virtual assistance, freelancing lets you control your schedule and location.
- Teaching English: Whether online or in-person, this remains one of the most popular ways to travel and earn simultaneously.
- Seasonal work or working holidays: From ski resorts to summer camps, temporary jobs abroad can fund your next ticket.
4. Travel Slowly
When you stay longer in one place, you not only save money but also immerse yourself deeper in local culture. Slow travel means fewer flights, lower accommodation costs (weekly or monthly rentals), and a stronger connection to the places you visit.
Bonus: You avoid burnout, which is a real thing for full-time travelers!
5. Volunteer or Exchange Skills
Platforms like Workaway, WWOOF, and HelpX connect travellers with hosts around the world who offer accommodation (and sometimes meals) in exchange for a few hours of work a day. It’s a great way to make travel more affordable and meaningful.
6. Be Flexible
You don’t need to have every detail planned. In fact, some of the best travel experiences come from spontaneous decisions. Stay open to opportunities—whether that’s a housesitting gig in Bali or a last-minute flight deal to Mexico.
Traveling long-term isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about being open to the journey.
Final Thoughts
The idea of leaving everything behind to travel more might feel wild, and it is! But it’s also incredibly rewarding. Whether you’re escaping the 9-to-5 grind, seeking personal growth, or simply craving adventure, long-term travel is a beautiful (and doable!) way to live more fully.
Remember: you don’t have to wait for “someday.” The world is out there waiting for you.
