About Rangiroa Atoll

Rangiroa Map

Rangiroa is renowned for having one of the world’s biggest atolls in the world and is part of the Tuamotu Archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean.

Definition:

An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef that encloses a lagoon, which is a central body of water. Atolls typically form around a sunken volcanic island, with the coral growing upward as the island subsides. This process results in a ring of coral that surrounds the lagoon.

The size of this atoll is 280 kilometers in total circumference and surrounds a spectacular lagoon that is 77 kilometers in total length and 26 kilometers wide.

Rangiroa Atoll

The estimated population of Rangiroa is about 3,000 people. Not big!
Locals live a peaceful, quiet lifestyle. Tourism is a huge reliance for income in the area, with dried coconut production, pearl farming and fishing following.

There are just 2 small villages with the main being Avatoru. This is the largest area where the small airport, accommodations, shops and restaurants are located.

The next village is Tiputa which is reached by boat and only about 5 minutes from Avatoru.

Visiting The Blue Lagoon Of Rangiroa Atoll

Rangiroa Blue Lagoon

This is without a doubt, one of the biggest draws for visitors to the atoll. The Blue Lagoon is actually a small lagoon within hundreds of tiny small islets, located inside the enormous main lagoon.

Its pristine shallow crystal clear blue waters are a dream come true. In all our travels to some beautiful tropical destinations around the world, we have never experienced such beauty!

Travel publications the world over, suggest this to be one of the most beautiful places in the South Pacific. With its stunning beauty, superb marine life and world renowned scuba diving, it truly is a tropical paradise!

Getting To The Blue Lagoon

The only way to access the lagoon, of course, is by boat. If you’re arriving to the island via cruise ship, like the vast majority of visitors, the best way to experience the lagoon is by taking an organized tour.

This is how we experienced the Blue Lagoon, on a wonderful full day tour with Moana Voyages. I booked the tour privately, well before leaving home, directly from their website.
You can check out my full review and photos of this outstanding tour, on the link at the bottom of this page.

Rangiroa Atoll Pristine Waters

This is a superb full day tour including; boat ride, snorkeling/swimming, beach lunch and more. Apparently from what I understand, you can visit the Blue Lagoon by taking an organized tour.

It will take about an hour, give or take, boat ride from Avatoru, where the cruise ship tenders will dock.

If you love snorkeling, the blue lagoon is terrific for viewing colorful tropical fish, black tip sharks, sting rays, sea turtles and more. We made one stop for snorkeling among the coral gardens, just before entering the Blue Lagoon.

Best Time To Visit Rangiroa Atoll

Rangiroa Atoll Beaches

The dry season in French Polynesia, runs from May thru October. This is the optimum time for dry weather and calmer seas. The wet season is from November to April, with the wettest months being January and February.

It can also be very hot and humid during these months.

Helpful Tips Banner

Be prepared for very hot sunny days, especially when out on the water!
Carry plenty of waterproof sunscreen, a good hat to cover your face {I use a Tilley hat always}. Also if you are going to be swimming/snorkeling, wear a long sleeve water shirt.

Trust me, you’ll be glad you did. You can burn in a matter of minutes!!

Rangiroa French Polynesia

We visited in the wet season from late January to early February. We really lucked out with the weather, having only a couple of days with periods of on/off heavy rain showers towards the end of our vacation.

If traveling on a budget like we usually do, then prices for accommodation, cruises and so forth are definitely cheaper during these months.
