While the dreamy shores and luxury beach villas in Maldives are often hot topics among travellers, the local culture is more or less overlooked by many. But oh how you will miss out on an experience of a lifetime if you don’t take the opportunity to dive into the rich Maldivian culture! Here are a few things that may pique your interest and encourage you to go on one of those local island visits.

About the history

Even though the Maldives is a small chain of islands, this paradise does boast a history of about 2500 years! The geographical location of the Maldives made it a popular stopover for those sailing along trade routes. From African to Arabian and even Indian, these brought the influence of many cultures to the island. One of the most significant monuments that have stood the test of time is the Old Friday Mosque built of coral stone in 1658.

Language & Religion

The local language is called “Dhivehi” and sounds unique with a few Hindi and Sinhala accents to words. While most locals speak good English, learning a phrase or two in the local language, could be useful for when you visit local islands. Maldivians strictly follow the Islamic religion, therefore, keep in mind to adhere to the conservative culture when you are away from your resort. however, during your stay at resorts like Amilla Maldives, feel free to simply be yourself.

Local Cuisine

Being an island with waters rich in tune and abundant coconut trees on land, the two main ingredients in Maldivian cuisine are tuna and grated coconut. Garudhiya, which is a clear fish soup is the local staple. The best way to enjoy some local cuisine would be during your visit to a local island.

Arts & Crafts

The Maldivian people are certainly talented and this is evident in the handicrafts they produce. If you do plan on purchasing souvenirs, consider the lacquer work boxes or mats woven from dried reeds.
