China anticipates air passenger travel to reach a record high in 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Passenger flights are expected to hit 700 million this year, according to Song Zhiyong, head of the Civil Aviation Administration, who spoke at the Asia Pacific Summit for Aviation Safety on Tuesday, as reported by China’s State Council.

In the first half of this year, total passenger trips increased by nine percent compared to the same period in 2019, indicating a strong recovery in China’s air travel sector following the pandemic. The country’s 2024 forecast exceeds the 619.6 million air passenger trips recorded in 2023, based on data released by Chinese officials in June.

During the eight-day Lunar New Year holidays earlier this year, tourism revenues in China soared by 47.4% year-on-year, driven by a surge in domestic travel, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.

International travel across China has also received a boost from the Paris Olympic Games, with demand for flights to and from Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and Europe particularly strong, according to a CAAC official who spoke to Chinese state media.
