I’ve been to many beautiful places in the Nordics already, yet a trip to Greenland evoked emotions that transcended mere admiration—it moved me to tears. The indescribable majesty of the untouched nature left an imprint on my soul. Delving into the intricacies of planning a Greenland travel itinerary, I’ve already written a comprehensive guide on how to plan a trip to Greenland, full of specific tips and tricks around transportation, Greenland hotel and tour bookings, as it requires some meticulous planning. So, I urge you to check it out before you book your trip to Greenland.

Now, let me regale you with the details of my 7-day Greenland travel itinerary. Hopefully, it will give you some inspiration beyond the usual cruise itineraries offered by tour companies.

A crucial point to note is that my visit transpired in August, marking the end of the summer period. The timing significantly influenced the array of activities available. I recommend considering an early spring expedition, a time when the island bids farewell to winter, and the skies blush with hues of pink as the first light graces the landscape. Let’s dive into the details of my Greenland travel itinerary!

Day 1. Layover in Kangerlussuaq

Your Greenland travel itinerary will most likely start with a flight from either Copenhagen or Reykjavik in Iceland touching down in Kangerlussuaq—the largest airport in Greenland. While Kangerlussuaq itself may not boast an abundance of excitement due to its small size, a prolonged layover can be turned to your advantage before you take a connecting flight to your destination.

As you first step onto Greenlandic soil, consider investing some time in securing a Greenland SIM card. To ensure you stay seamlessly connected to the internet throughout your trip. Head to the post office conveniently located across the street from the airport to acquire your SIM card. Be mindful of the limited open hours, so I recommend taking care of this task right away. Adjacent to the post office, there is a local supermarket, providing an opportunity to stock up on snacks or provisions for the journey ahead.

A few things to do in Kangerlussuaq:

Tundra Safari

  • Embark on a short 1,5-hour tour that will take you across the Arctic terrain in off-road 4WD. The primary goal is to spot musk oxen, majestic creatures that inhabit the region. The rugged landscapes may also unveil other wildlife, including enchanting reindeer. Don’t forget to bring a pair of binoculars to enhance your wildlife spotting experience. I booked my trip with Albatros. They also have a counter at the airport, so you can book straight there as well.

Extended Expeditions

  • For those with a bit more time, opt for longer excursions to iconic destinations such as the Greenland Ice Sheet at Point 660 or the awe-inspiring Russell Glacier. These immersive trips demand 4-5 hours, so keep a keen eye on the clock to ensure you make the most of your layover without missing your onward journey.

I opted not to stay overnight in Kangerlussuaq and I am happy with that decision. A brief stopover in Kangerlussuaq allowed me to get a first taste of the Arctic wonders was enough to excite me for further unique locations I planned for my Greenland travel itinerary.

The next leg of my Greenland expedition unfolds with a flight bound for Ilulissat. While my stay in this charming town is limited to just one night, it serves as a crucial hub for reaching my ultimate destination. But do not worry, we’ll be back to explore Ilulissat in full in just a day.

Day 2. Uummannaq. A Picturesque Fishing Village.

Greenland-Travel-Itinerary.-Day-2-Uummannaq

One of the most exciting points in my Greenland travel itinerary was a small fishing town of Uummannaq. I discovered it by chance while reading upon different locations in Greenland. Captivated by the breathtaking images of the heart-shaped mountain at the heart of the island, I couldn’t resist the allure to include it into my 7-day Greenland itinerary by all means possible. Eventually, it became the unexpected gem and a highlight of my Greenland trip.

Traveling to Uummannaq

I had to plan a lot around a flight to Uummannaq, as flights to this destination operate only on specific days from Ilulissat. What makes this journey even more exhilarating is a helicopter ride, turning the commute into an impromptu aerial tour. Picture this: your ticket to Uummannaq includes a stopover in the quaint town of Qaarsut, where a 10-seater helicopter awaits to transport you to the picturesque fishing village.

Seize the opportunity to jump into a window seat during this part of the journey, as the views over the island are nothing short of spectacular. The surreal landscapes of floating icebergs unfold beneath you, making it feel like an extraordinary helicopter tour integrated into the airfare for free.

Things to do in Uummannaq

Upon landing in Uummannaq, the first order of business is checking into your hotel. Accommodations in this charming town are limited, and you’ll find them through local websites rather than mainstream platforms like Booking.

Avani Homes website is a good starting point, but ensure your booking is confirmed via email, as a mere online reservation doesn’t guarantee a spot. Here’s another reminder to check out my guide on how to plan a trip to Greenland for more information on how to find hotel bookings in Greenland.

With accommodation sorted, take your sweet time to roam the streets of the village on your own. There are no tours available in this destination, but you won’t need them. The unreal beauty of the heart-shaped mountain in the middle of the island and streets filled with colorful traditional houses will be enough to get you busy.

Places not to miss in Uummannaq:

  • Santa’s mail office, where the letters to Santa Claus from all over the world end up.

  • Enjoy the view over the bay from Aqqusinersuaq street, where fishermen dock their boats. You’ll be overwhelmed with smell of fish, but bewildered by the view of floating glaciers in the bay.

  • Venture to the very end of the road in Uummannaq, and you’ll encounter the unexpected place – the FC Malamuk football field. While it may seem like just a playing field at first, the moment you turn back, absorbing the panoramic view that the footballers get to enjoy, you’ll find yourself tempted to linger for an impromptu practice match.

Where to Eat in Uummannaq?

In Uummannaq, dining options are almost non-existent, making a visit to the supermarket a practical choice for securing your own provisions. However, for those seeking a taste of local prepared food, I can recommend two options:

  • Sporthallen sports complex has a canteen that serves basic burgers and fries for the visitors. It won’t be anything fancy, but it is a decent spot to replenish your energy supplies.
  • If your visit aligns with the tourism season, visit Cafemma Uummannaq, a local cafe situated near the harbor. It offers some basic food and a cozy ambiance to enjoy coffee and homemade cakes.

But the best way to spend your day in Uummannaq is with a camera in your hands, trying to find good viewpoints for a perfect snapshot of an authentic charm of a typical Greenlandic fishing village.

Day 3. Arrive to Ilulissat. Sunset Fjords Cruise.

Today we fly back to Ilulissat, the gem of Greenland and the epicenter from which many adventures unfold. It is not just a home to UNESCO World Heritage site, but also a door to Ilulissat Icefjord, numerous hiking trails and the breathtaking Disko Bay, where huge pieces of floating icebergs will make you cry, just like it happened to me.

Sunset Icefjord Cruise

Upon landing in Ilulissat in the afternoon, take advantage of extra time to check into your chosen hotel. Ilulissat offers a broader array of places to stay, unlike other towns on this travel itinerary. After you’ve taken some rest from the flight and savored a meal, use the rest of the evening to embark on a magical sunset boat ride amidst the fjords and icebergs. These icefjord cruises typically set sail around 8 or 10 PM, offering an unforgettable perspective of the Arctic landscape bathed in the golden hues of the setting sun.

For my icefjord cruise, I opted fo Discoline explorer and I was very happy with the experience. The cruise allowed me to immerse myself in the grandeur of the Ilulissat Icefjord, witnessing nature’s marvel in the form of colossal ice formations. The exceptional quietness of the fjord allows you to even hear the cracks of the ice, if you are lucky.

If you’re curious about suggestions on where to overnight in Ilulissat, I can recommend Hotel SØMA Ilulissat, where I stayed. The rooms are overlooking the fjord and my pleasant stay was complemented by a delightful breakfast. Keep in mind that the hotel is located at the edge of town, requiring a 20-minute walk to reach the center. However, Ilulissat offers hotel options to suit various budgets and preferences, ensuring you find the perfect abode for your Arctic escapade.

Day 4. Ilulissat. Full Day of Adventure.

Ilulissat is a pivotal destination of your Greenland travel itinerary deserving at least a three-day stay. Today will be all about adventures in the breathtaking Arctic haven and sightseeing in the third most populous city in Greenland.

Morning: Whale Safari Extravaganza

Today, you can start the day early by joining a thrilling whale safari tour. If you hit it at the right time, this might be one of the most incredible experiences to witness these huge ocean creatures so close to you. The abundance of whales might leave you mesmerized and you might eventually even get tired of taking the pictures. Bear in mind that this tour is only available in the summer season, so you might want to choose different tours if you visit during a different season.

Afternoon: Strolling Through Ilulissat

Upon returning from the whale safari, take a moment to recharge and take off the extra layers of clothes you put on for a boat ride before embarking on a leisurely stroll through the charming Ilulissat. Explore the distinctive colorful architecture of Greenlandic wooden houses, breath in the Arctic atmosphere and stop at some souvenir shops to bring back home with you. Your city walk could end at Hotel Icefiord, perched on a high rock with a beautiful view of the bay.

Evening: Dinner with a View at Restaurant Icefjord

As the day winds down, treat yourself to dinner at Restaurant Icefjord for exceptional tasty food made of local produce with a view! Positioned on a lofty vantage point overlooking the bay, the restaurant promises not only a culinary delight but also a visual feast, especially if you secure a booking around sunset.

Day 5. Ilulissat Fjord Hike and Departure

As your Greenland adventure draws to a close in Ilulissat, make the most of your final day, tying up any loose ends and immersing yourself in the Arctic beauty one last time.

Morning: Icefjord Centre and Hike

Begin the day with a walk around the city on your way to Icefjord Centre. It is situated on the edge of the Ilulissat, offering an opportunity to take some great city shots on the way there. If you choose to walk instead of taking a taxi or a bus, you’ll pass through a husky farm, where you can observe puppies plating around.

Once you reach the Icefjord center, you can stop here for a while to visit the exhibition and enhance your understanding of the region’s glacial wonders, learn about people living in the area, and the lifecycle of ice. They also have a cute cafe with fantastic nature views, where you can refuel for the next bit of hiking or buy some souvenirs home.

From here, you have two options: either take a 1.6km hiking trail to Ilulissat fjord and return or take a full 4km loop via the Seqinniarfik, Holms bakke. Whichever you choose, breathtaking views of the Ilulissat Icefjord are guaranteed. Once you reach it, take a moment to witness the magical spectacle of ice breaking and dissolving into the Arctic waters—a sensory experience that leaves an indelible mark.

Afternoon: Lunch at Local Café

On your way back to the city, pause for lunch at one of the numerous cafes to savor the local food. I stopped at the Inuit Café for some fish stew, a fresh sea produce of the most exportable product of Greenland.

Evening: Boarding the Overnight Ferry to Sisimiut

At 5 PM, embark on a unique journey by taking the overnight ferry from Ilulissat to Sisimiut. Ferries are not easy to catch, as they go through a certain town only about once per week. However, opting for this maritime route adds a distinctive perspective to your Greenland’s adventure, as you will experience how locals travel around the country. Choose between a premium room with a comfortable bed and a window or the 2-story couchette reminiscent of train compartments. Whichever one you choose, be mindful that a stormy night may test your sea tolerance either way, so come prepared with seasickness remedies. However, the overnight ferry serves as not just a mode of transportation but an experience in itself, allowing you the prospect of waking up to a gorgeous fjord view as you approach Sisimiut from the sea.

Day 6. Sisimiut. Greenland’s Second Largest City.

As the morning ferry glides into Sisimiut, ensure that your hotel is ready for your arrival; most accommodations generously offer pick-up services due to the limited availability of taxis in the area.

Positioned favorably for observing the Northern Lights during the applicable season, Sisimiut opens its doors to an array of exciting activities. Opt for a boat tour to explore the abandoned ghost village of Assaqutaq, frozen in time since 1970. Alternatively, delve into thrilling pursuits like whale watching, dog sledding, or fishing, each offering a unique glimpse into the local culture and natural wonders.

While my attempt at a walking city tour was ruined by the rain, Sisimiut provided comfort when it came to culinary delights. Indulge in a local delicacy – the snow crab, available at the Hotel Sisimiut restaurant as part of a sumptuous seafood plate. Don’t miss the chance to pamper yourself with their arctic spa offerings, including the allure of an outdoor Jacuzzi.

Greenland-Travel-Itinerary-Day-6-Sisimiut-Houses Greenland-Travel-Itinerary-Day-6-Sisimiut-Seafood

For a cozy stay, I chose to overnight in Hotel SØMA Sisimiut, one of the few lodging options in town. Other choices include Hotel Sisimiut, Sisimiut Bed&Breakfast, and Villa.

Day 7. Farewell to Greenland and Departure

Savor a delightful breakfast at your hotel before check out and saying farewell to Greenland and before heading to Sisimiut airport. Most likely, you’ll need a stopover in Kangerlussuaq again before you head out of the country.

Summary

My trip to Greenland will remain one of the most extraordinary adventures that I’ve planned and took on myself. It will leave you amazed not just by the nature sights, but also by exploration of locals and their culture, which is still pretty much going strong. From the majestic landscapes to the resilient spirit of the people, this adventure will undoubtedly stand out as one of the most extraordinary trips you’ve experienced.

For a selection of tours better suited for another season of Greenland travel itinerary, I suggest to take a look at Guide to Greenland site. They have a nice selection of offers that could be filtered by time of the year, location or duration of stay. Alternatively, you can always find good information on the official Visit Greenland website.

Safe travels and may the memories of Greenland linger in your heart for years to come!
