Marshall County’s tourism and local business surged this summer, thanks to popular riverboat cruises attracting nationwide visitors to its scenic waterways and historic sites.
This summer, Marshall County has witnessed a significant boost in tourism and local commerce, largely driven by the rising appeal of riverboat cruises. These vessels, offering scenic and engaging journeys along the region’s beautiful waterways, have attracted visitors from across the nation, greatly enriching the county’s tourism scene.
A recent highlight was when American Cruise Lines made a scheduled stop at Riverview Park in McMechen. Early in the morning, the riverboat brought ashore around 80 enthusiastic tourists, who traveled from states as distant as Missouri and California. These visitors had the chance to explore key attractions in the area, including the historic Moundsville Penitentiary and the ancient Grave Creek Mound.
Local businesses have reaped the benefits of this increased tourist activity. Shops, eateries, and other service providers have experienced a notable uptick in customer traffic, with many reporting substantial increases in sales. The gift shop at Grave Creek Mound, for example, has seen a surge in patronage, with 80 to 100 visitors on cruise days. To meet this growing demand, the shop has extended its hours, remaining open on Sundays to accommodate the last riverboat cruises of the season.
The economic impact of this riverboat-fueled tourism is clear in the revitalization of small businesses and the broader local economy. As Marshall County continues to attract riverboats and promote its rich cultural and natural assets, the region is set to become an even more desirable destination for travelers, further solidifying its standing on the tourism map.
