Juneyao Airlines, one of China’s leading privately-owned carriers, is set to launch flights between Shanghai and Melbourne, marking a significant milestone in Australia’s aviation recovery. Starting December 19, 2024, Juneyao will operate three weekly flights, increasing to a daily service during the peak months of January and February. This will be the airline’s first venture into Australia, a significant achievement for Melbourne Airport (MEL), pushing its mainland Chinese seat capacity beyond pre-pandemic levels.

The extended travel restrictions in China have slowed Australia’s aviation sector’s post-pandemic recovery, with full international travel unable to reach 2019 levels until these restrictions were fully lifted. During the gradual easing of restrictions, Melbourne Airport worked closely with major Chinese carriers to plan their return, paving the way for new opportunities like this partnership with Juneyao Airlines. Currently, Juneyao operates to approximately 200 destinations across Asia and Europe, utilizing a fleet of 92 aircraft, including Airbus A320s and Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.

For Melbourne Airport, the introduction of Juneyao Airlines is more than just an expansion of its international routes—it’s a signal of renewed confidence in the global travel market. This partnership underscores the airport’s strategic efforts to not only restore but surpass its pre-pandemic capacities, particularly in the highly competitive Chinese market. As Melbourne continues to attract new international carriers, it positions itself as a key gateway between Australia and Asia, fostering stronger economic and cultural ties between the regions.
