Best time to visit?

In late spring (May) and early fall (September–October), the weather in Greece is most comfortable, and the crowds are smaller.

️ How to get there?

Athens International Airport (ATH) is the main international airport, about 20 km east of the city. A good budget-airline alternative is often a regional airport (for example on one of the islands), but for simplicity, the Athens airport is your main gateway.

️ How to get around?

On mainland Greece, your best transport options are either a rental car or the coach/bus networks to reach archaeological sites, the countryside and smaller towns. Ferries and domestic flights connect to many islands; their service is most regular in May-September.

Athens is easy to explore on foot, and there is also a good metro system. Suburban rail is most convenient from the airport.

⏰ How many days to visit Greece?

For Athens, I would recommend planning at least 3-4 days to discover the main highlights. Adding a day or two will allow for a slower travel pace and adding day trips to, for example, Delphi or Sounion.

Are you planning a road trip along several islands? Then I would recommend at least 7-10 days for a short loop such as Athens → Mykonos → Santorini → Naxos → Athens.

We explored the island of Crete for 12 days ourselves.

⭐ Best Tourist Pass

We recommend the Athens Turbopass City Pass, which includes skip-the-line entry tickets for the Acropolis, the Acropolis Museum, and various other museums, as well as a 48-hour hop-on hop-off bus ticket including an audio guide. There is an option to add a public transportation ticket and a boat tour.

Looking to visit a lot of the archaeological sites in Athens? Then check out the Archaeological Sites Combo Pass. This pass gives you discounted access to up to five top archaeological sites, for example, the Acropolis, Roman Agora, Ancient Agora, and the Temple of Zeus.
