Published on October 29, 2025
The importance of the music industry to the urban landscape of Hamburg has been definitively confirmed by a comprehensive new study. The findings demonstrate that the city’s vibrant array of concerts, world-class musicals, and diverse festivals are essential assets, contributing significantly to the city’s overall appeal. The study, conducted collaboratively by Hamburg Music Business and the Chamber of Commerce, aimed to provide deeper insight into Hamburg‘s image as a “city of music” and its perception among both residents and prospective national and international visitors.
This research, carried out by the Hamburg-based market research institute Research for Future, involved the surveying of 1,546 citizens and potential tourists from both Germany and abroad, with a clear focus on the elements that enhance the city’s attractiveness and contribute to the competition for skilled labour. It has been conclusively established that the musical offerings serve as a formidable magnet for tourism and are closely linked to the perceived standard of living. The resulting data highlights several key areas where the cultural sector provides substantial value and competitive advantage to the Hanseatic city.

The Foundation of Identity and Standard of Living
A powerful correlation between the city’s musical life and the contentment of its inhabitants has been observed. A substantial majority of respondents, approximately seventy-five per cent, expressed satisfaction with living in a municipality so distinctively characterised by music. This feeling of collective positive identity is further underscored by the fact that sixty-three per cent of those surveyed believe music forms an inherent part of Hamburg‘s unique character. For a notable fifty-four per cent of interviewees, this characteristic was considered to be of particular personal significance, indicating a deep emotional connection being fostered by the accessibility of music.
Hamburg as a Recognised “City of Music”
The study sought to measure how firmly the appellation “city of music” is established in the public consciousness, and the results confirmed a strong recognition. A majority of sixty per cent of respondents within Germany perceive Hamburg as a definitive “city of music,” a term that is also agreed upon by fifty-two per cent of international respondents. An interesting demographic variance was noted, however, as agreement with this designation was far higher among older segments of the German population; seventy-three per cent of those aged sixty-five and over concurred with the term, compared with only forty-five per cent of those aged thirty-five and under.
A Key Factor in the Battle for Skilled Labour
In the modern economic environment, the competition for top-tier professional talent is fierce, and the cultural landscape is increasingly understood to be a critical weapon in this struggle. The musical offerings available in Hamburg are regarded as playing a pivotal role in the city’s effort to attract and retain skilled labour. For professionals in managerial roles, music appears to be an exceptionally important factor; a striking ninety-one per cent of respondents in a management position indicated that music holds significant personal value for them. Furthermore, seventy-one per cent of these key professionals stated that the musical provision was of greater importance to them than other cultural events, underscoring its unique leverage in recruitment.
Driving Forces of Tourism and Visitation
The role of music in generating tourism revenue and footfall is clearly demonstrated by the survey’s data. A considerable portion of both domestic and international visitors surveyed, sixty-two per cent, indicated that their primary motivation for travelling to Hamburg was the available musical offerings. This figure experiences a significant surge among the younger demographic, with seventy-seven per cent of under-thirty-fives reporting that music was the main driver for their visit. The positive influence of the city’s musical variety on the visitor experience is undeniable. More than seventy-five per cent of domestic tourists, along with sixty-two per cent of foreign tourists, agreed that the abundance of music events and venues enhanced the quality of their stay in the city.

The Music Industry as a Key Economic Factor
The cultural vitality of Hamburg is not merely a soft benefit; it has been affirmed as a measurable and significant economic engine. The city’s dynamic music scene is understood to be a key economic factor, a reality substantiated by the 2023 music industry report. The economic scale of the sector is considerable, being responsible for the generation of over one billion euros in gross value added, and is calculated to support more than sixteen thousand jobs, making it a substantial contributor to the urban Gross Domestic Product. Crucially, the musical tourism component alone is responsible for generating approximately nine hundred million euros in annual revenue.
Conclusion and Future Imperatives
The evidence provided by the comprehensive study decisively demonstrates that the musical landscape of Hamburg is instrumental in bolstering its reputation, enriching the lives of its residents, and driving substantial economic activity. The city’s status is elevated, and its competitive position in the global race for talent is strengthened through this cultural asset. Therefore, continuous investment in and strategic marketing of the diverse musical offerings—from the architectural marvel of the Elbphilharmonie to the vibrant Reeperbahn Festival and extensive club culture—are not merely cultural expenditures but essential economic and social imperatives. The collective findings confirm that music is inextricably linked to the prosperity and global standing of Hamburg, requiring ongoing attention to both the industry’s infrastructure and its international promotion.
