Haikou, China: A City that Transforms into a Stage, Uniting Art for Everyone
HAIKOU, CHINA – Between September 28 and October 8, bustling Haikou, the capital of China’s Hainan Province, drew worldwide attention through an extraordinary showcase of public art. Hosting almost 150 events, including lively outdoor lawn concerts, refined opera salons, and animated street parades, the city radiated creative energy. These colorful festivities elevated Haikou into a limitless palace of the arts, further establishing it as the “Land of International Performing Arts” in the East.

“The art of paper cutting can be worn!” Mohammed from Sudan was impressed by children wearing costumes inspired by paper cutting at the 2025 Intangible Cultural Heritage Fashion Show. “In Haikou, art is everywhere.” This holiday, he and his friends immersed themselves in the artistic atmosphere of the “Coconut City.”
During the 2025 Haikou Art Week, the city is transformed into a vibrant hub of creativity and culture. In Haikou’s Shicha Village, known for its historical ambiance, fashion shows feature models walking on volcanic stone runways clad in traditional Mamian skirts—honoring the area’s heritage. On Qilou Old Street, a mix of Eastern and Western art exhibitions, including painting, sculpture, and immersive installations, attract art lovers.
As night falls, Evergreen Park becomes the stage for spectacular drone light performances that dazzle both locals and tourists. This event-rich week offers visitors a journey combining the best of tradition and modernity, with additional experiences such as local food tasting, live music, and interactive art scattered throughout the city’s scenic locations.
“This trip is particularly meaningful. My kids not only learned about history but also developed artistic inspirations,” said a father from northern China after enjoying a symphony concert. “This is not something you get in the classroom.”

The 2025 Haikou Art Week boasts an extensive lineup of cultural events, inviting tourists from around the globe to immerse themselves in the local arts scene. The week includes a variety of offerings such as gallery exhibitions, public art installations, workshops, and live performances, all reflecting Haikou’s vibrant creative spirit.
This celebration of art underscores the city’s appeal as a premier travel destination and gives a significant boost to tourism, as demonstrated during the recent National Day holiday when Haikou played host to 1.1345 million visitors, earning 1.414 billion yuan in tourism revenue.
Significantly, Haikou’s dedication to art and culture is an ongoing commitment, not limited to holiday festivities. Recent years have seen the launch of multiple artistic initiatives that embed creative experiences into the fabric of daily life. The city has established an array of reading corners and rotating art exhibitions in public spaces such as libraries, community centers, and shopping malls.
These programs aim to ensure arts accessibility for everyone, creating pathways for people of all ages and backgrounds to regularly experience culture and creativity near home. The cumulative effect is a blossoming artistic scene, with Haikou rapidly evolving into a city celebrated for its vibrant cultural life and enhanced quality of living for its residents.
