A trip to Britain, whether you’re visiting England. Scotland, Wales. Ireland, or you’re touring around the whole of the place, is really exciting and for many of us, it is likely to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, so it’s really important that you take the time to give yourself the real British experience. That being the case, here are X things you absolutely must do on your first British vacation.
Start With a Walk Through History
A trip to Britain feels a bit like stepping into a storybook, one filled with castles, cathedrals, cobbled lanes, and centuries of tales. On your first visit, make time to wander through some of the country’s most iconic historical sites, and you will not regret it. Explore the Tower of London, stroll past the grand Houses of Parliament, or visit Edinburgh Castle for dramatic views over the city. Britain wears its history proudly, and seeing it up close is one of the best introductions to the country.
Experience a Classic Afternoon Tea
There are lots of great foods in Britain, despite its reputation for terrible cooking, but if you want to sample some food that is guaranteed to be good, and which will give you more than a little insight into British culture, then it has to be afternoon tea.
This beloved ritual is the perfect blend of comfort and elegance: warm scones, dainty sandwiches, ornate pastries, and a perfectly brewed pot of tea. You will be able to find it in lots of hotels and cafes around Britain, and it is the perfect ritual to stop and relax with in the middle of a hectic day of exploring.
Visit a Traditional Pub
British pubs are not just a place to get alcohol, they are local hubs where everyone can gather together for a nice chat, while they drinks craft beer or enjoy some good pub grub – fish and chips, pie and mash – so if you really want to get a feel for a place and its people, head to one of the most traditional looking pubs (try and find one with a roaring fire if you can) and start talking to people.
Explore the British Countryside
Although many travellers focus on cities like London or Edinburgh, Britain’s countryside is where much of its charm shines. The rolling hills of the Cotswolds, the rugged coastline of Cornwall, the dramatic peaks of the Lake District, and the peaceful meadows of the Yorkshire Dales are all worth exploring. Take a scenic walk, enjoy a picnic, or simply admire the views; nature here is varied, beautiful, and surprisingly accessible.
Visit a Museum or Two
Britain has a lot of history, so it is not surprising that it also has a lot of museums, and many of them are completely free to explore, so you are definitely going to want to take advantage of that. The British Museum, the National Gallery, the Tate Modern, and the Natural History Museum are all incredible places to spend a few hours, and you’ll definitely learn something.
Whatever you choose to do, I hope your British adventure is the best.
